Choosing a kitchen hood

In order for the air in the kitchen to always be clean and fresh, you need a good hood. How to choose it correctly? Our questions were answered by Anna Burakova, manager of the household appliances hall of the M.Video company.

Question: How powerful should the hood be?

Answer: It depends on the room where it will be installed. In order for the hood to cope well with its main task - purifying the air in the kitchen, it is necessary to calculate its performance before buying. This parameter is calculated using a very simple formula: kitchen area (m2) X ceiling height X 12. The result you get is the minimum power at which your hood will effectively purify the air.

V.: Often the hood is so noisy that you don't want to turn it on. What noise level is acceptable?

A.: Indeed, the noise level is a very important selection parameter. Often the discomfort associated with the noisy operation of the hood negates all the useful properties of this unit. To avoid this problem, you need to turn on the hood right in the store to assess the noise level. When doing this, take into account the performance parameter that you calculated in advance using our formula. It is important that you are satisfied with the noise level that the hood produces at the power you need. Please note that the hood is most noisy at maximum power, so it will be better if your performance parameter is 20-30% less than the maximum power of the hood.

Q.: Does it matter what light sources the hood is equipped with?

A.: A good model not only purifies the air in the kitchen, but also makes the cooking process more comfortable due to well-placed light sources. It is good when the lighting is located in front, and the bulbs are halogen or fluorescent.

Q.: What if the kitchen does not have the ability to remove air through the central ventilation system?

A.: Indeed, the vast majority of hoods operate in exhaust mode. But in this case, you can buy an inexpensive unit that is already ready to work in recirculation mode. It comes with a charcoal filter. In general, most modern hoods of the so-called "chimney type" can work in both modes, but the carbon filter, as a rule, is not included in the kit and must be purchased separately. Please note that the recirculation mode is used as a last resort, as it reduces the performance of the hood by 40% and significantly increases the noise level. In addition, periodic replacement of carbon filters is required.

Q.: Do I need to install additional filters to clean the air more efficiently?

О.: Almost all models are equipped with grease-absorbing removable filters - we buy them as a set together with the hood. Filters are made from different materials, it is better if it is made of stainless steel - it can be washed in a dishwasher. It's good to have a dirty filter indicator. But the carbon filter, as mentioned above, most often has to be bought additionally, since it is intended only for recycling.

Useful Modes

  • Residual fan stroke. A mode that allows the hood to work after it has been turned off. Designed to collect residual heat and odors after cooking is complete.
  • Ventilation mode can be turned on before you leave the house for a long time. The hood will automatically ventilate the air in the kitchen.
  • Electronic air scanning is a feature of ultra-modern models. The appliance automatically turns on after cooking starts, based on the intensity of heat and steam.
