The photo exhibition "The Fall of the Berlin Wall" has opened in the Central Manege in Moscow. This autumn will mark the twentieth anniversary of this historic event.

The history of the Berlin Wall has given rise to many images, symbols, metaphors. They were recorded by passers-by with cameras, photographers, full-time and freelance photojournalists.

“There is no difference between reportage and artistic shooting, if it is done well. Most of the photographs we chose from thousands of documents documenting what Berlin was like before the wall was built, how it was built - and it was rebuilt three times, how it was destroyed. This is a huge material that we have chosen in its best versions,” says Olga Sviblova, director of the Moscow House of Photography museum.

Before appearing in the museum as exhibits, these shots managed to become a real sensation. They were the main illustrative newsmakers of the era. They announced, even shouted from the pages of newspapers.

The fall of the wall is recorded in the photographs very emotionally, and the erection, on the contrary, is strictly, as if according to the canons. It is easy to distinguish which is the east side and which is the west. The freedom of the West is accompanied by graffiti. The construction of the wall began on the night of August 1961. Until November 1989, it divided the two Germanys. And then its small particles became souvenirs for tourists.
