American scientists managed to develop the principle of effective treatment of migraines by surgery.

Facial plastic surgery helps with migraine

The main cause of chronic migraines is irritation of the trigeminal facial nerve. Until recently, this attack was treated with freezing of the nerve, but now surgeons are confident that the mechanisms responsible for the occurrence of pain can be completely removed. According to Case Western Reserve University Medical Center, the new method not only improves the quality of life of patients, but also eliminates some signs of aging.

In the experiment conducted by experts, 75 volunteers took part, 49 of whom underwent all the necessary procedures to remove the trigeminal facial nerve, and the rest were subject to the placebo effect. At the same time, the actions of surgeons in both cases resembled a conventional plastic facelift. After a year, 83 percent of patients from the first group reported a significant reduction in the intensity of headaches, and 57 percent - a complete relief from migraines. In turn, in the placebo group, similar results were observed in only 4 percent of cases.

Researchers believe their discovery supports the use of plastic and reconstructive surgery to help people who suffer from chronic migraines.
