Chronic sleep disorder can lead to manic depression in a child, doctors have found
Scientists from U School of Medicine
Manic depression is a mental condition characterized by frequent mood swings, as well as periods of exacerbation of so-called manias. Previously, scientists have hypothesized that sleep disturbance may be one of the defining characteristics of this disease in children.
The new study looked at 300 children, some of whom had different variations of RORB. Scientists have found four different variations of this gene that have been directly linked to manic depression.
"Our study suggests that the biological clock genes, and RORB in particular, may be worthy targets for new work to determine the molecular basis of bipolar disorder," said team leader Dr. Alexandre Niculescu.
