"Emotions or mood can change our body's response to pain, as they are interrelated," said study author Matthew Roy, professor at Columbia University. “Our experiments have determined exactly when pain is perceived by the brain, and how it intensifies along with negative emotions.”

At the University of Montreal, Professor Roy and colleagues subjected 13 volunteers to electrical shocks. The shock caused a knee jerk in people, the level of which scientists could measure.

"We found that looking at unpleasant pictures increased the pain symptom, unlike pleasant ones," Professor Roy said. “Thus, non-pharmaceutical interventions, like nice pictures or music, can be used by clinicians to deal with pain.”
