Lack of sleep robs us of years of life and adds extra pounds
Scientists have long been saying that lack of sleep is extremely unhe althy. If a person sleeps less than 7 hours a day, then he causes stress in his body, which can become a trigger for a number of serious diseases - from oncology to heart attacks and strokes. Sleep-deprived people tend to look older than their years. Their skin turns yellow and wrinkled, and their ability to work and concentration are steadily declining.
But now science has received evidence that lack of sleep has another significant disadvantage - being overweight. In the UK, over 60% of people have weight problems. And the cause of "excess fat" may not be the wrong diet or a sedentary lifestyle.
"We've done a whole series of studies looking at the relationship between weight and sleep, as well as looking at metabolic rate," says endocrinologist Sharad Taeri of Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. “We were able to find out that people who sleep significantly less than they should, as a rule, experience problems with being overweight.”
Thus, citizens who sleep less than four hours at night are 73% more likely to gain extra pounds. Restrictions in night rest often leads to the fact that a person replenishes the lost energy with the help of food. Thus, it gets to 900 extra calories per day.
