Crackle: DIY

Tulip Tray

The work of Natalia Tarasova

Two-step method

You will need:

• brushes, napkins

• paint-outline

• acrylic paints

• craquelure varnish (gummilak) based on alcohol

• top coat (gum arabica)

• wax-based patina or bituminous mastic

1. We transfer the pattern to the tray through carbon paper.

2. Outline the pattern with gold contour paint-reserve and paint inside with acrylic paints.

3. We cover the entire surface of the tray with gummilac, trying not to brush twice in one place.

Let dry for 1 hour.

After that, apply a thin layer of water-based varnish (gumarabik).

The varnish is self-leveling and dries quickly, in 20-30 minutes.

4. We apply the mastic on a napkin and begin to rub the cracks in a circular motion, instantly removing the excess with a dry napkin. Depending on the desired effect, you can start grouting at different times: either when large cracks appear, or when smaller ones appear.

Let dry for 24 hours.

Vintage box

Svetlana Novozhilova's work

Two-step method

You will need:

• wooden base

• decoupage primer

• decorative napkins

• decoupage glue

• craquelure varnish (solvent based)

• craquelure polish (water based)

• hair dryer, brushes, rags

• skin, scissors

• oil paint

1. We sand the surface of the box and apply primer for decoupage. Separate the top layer of the napkin, cut it out and glue it on the lid of the box.

2. Apply solvent-based craquelure varnish and let it dry (4-6 hours).

Apply a second water-based polish and speed up the drying process with a hair dryer. Cracks begin to appear: the thicker the applied layer of varnish and the wider the brush, the larger the size of the cracks will be.

3, 4 We show cracks by rubbing oil paint with our fingers. Using a cotton cloth, remove excess paint until the desired result is obtained. After three days, we fix the result by applying another layer of craquelure varnish based on a solvent or alcohol.

Photo frame

The work of Anna Akimova

One-step method

You will need:

• glass frame

• alcohol, wipes, sponge

• brushes, scissors

• glass outline paint

• glass decoupage glue

• craquelure polish

• acrylic paint (white, yellow and metallic or glossy)

1. Degrease the glass with alcohol or acetone. Then we cut out the pattern from the napkin (tulip flower), removing the 2 lower layers of paper. We apply a frame for a photo with a contour on the glass and glue the cut-out napkin with decoupage glue on the glass face down. Apply craquelure varnish to the inner surface of the frame and dry for 20-30 minutes.

2, 3 Cover the flower with one coat of white acrylic paint and wait for it to dry. Then we cover with metallic or glossy acrylic paint. Draw additional decorative stripes with gold outline paint on glass.

4. We apply yellow acrylic paint with a sponge to the entire surface of the frame, which remains free. Dry and re-coat with a layer of metallic. Cracks will appear on the front of the frame.
