Seaweed bread could curb the obesity epidemic
This is the conclusion of a group of scientists from the University of Newcastle. They found that when seaweed is added to regular bread, cookies and yogurt, the amount of fat our body absorbs can be reduced by as much as 75%!
The secret of this mechanism is in the special fibers that contain algae. These fibers, in the form of alginates, are already used as a thickening agent in some foods, although in very small quantities. But one has only to increase their dose, as the most delicious and high-calorie foods will become practically safe for our waists.
But won't it change the taste? Preliminary tests have already reached the stage of tasting, and experts say that the sweetness of products from the addition of seaweed components does not suffer at all.
"The idea is to add natural fiber to the foods we eat regularly every day," says Dr. Lane Brownlee of Newcastle University. - After all, for example, bread, biscuits or yoghurts are three-quarters fat. With the help of algae, these fats will not be deposited under our skin, but will flow away from the body.”
