Happily married men have a much lower risk of fatal stroke

A happy marriage prolongs a man's life, Israeli researchers have found. Yuri Goldbort of the Neufield Cardiology Institute at the University of Tel Aviv examined the medical records of 10,000 male civil servants from 1965 to 1999. The men during this period were interviewed about the level of happiness and marital status.

It turned out that bachelors are 64% more likely to die from a stroke than married people. But the whole point was that the marriage was just happy!

Thus, men who admitted to being unhappy in marriage were 64% more likely to suffer a fatal stroke than those men who felt happy. However, Dr. Goldbort says that the results of his study are still preliminary. In addition, he has no information about stroke survivors or women.

This is not the first study to show the he alth benefits of family life. But Goldbort suggests that an unhappy marriage is every bit as dangerous to men's he alth as single life.
