Doctors often recommend inhalation to treat both dry and wet coughs. In the first case, inhalation moisturizes the mucous membranes, allowing you to get rid of painful attacks for a while. At the same time, the discharge of mucus and sputum improves, and the cough gradually turns into a wet, that is, productive. In the second, inhalation activates the evacuation of sputum, accelerating the healing process.

If you are going to carry out procedures at home, pay attention to a few important rules. Firstly, inhalations are not recommended at elevated body temperature. Secondly, make sure that the temperature of the steam does not exceed 30-40 degrees, hotter components can cause increased swelling. Thirdly, keep in mind that inhalations will be most effective if they are carried out at the first symptoms of the disease, as soon as the "scratching" in the throat area begins and a dry cough appears. Fourth, if possible, use a nebulizer - it's both easier and safer than breathing over a plate or kettle of hot water.

For dry cough

1. Decoctions of medicinal herbs. Chamomile, sage, St. John's wort, calendula, raspberry leaves, wild rosemary, peppermint are suitable. These herbs have anti-inflammatory, expectorant, mucolytic and antiseptic effects. For inhalation, pour boiling water over the herb, let it brew for 30 minutes, pour into a small plate. Then bend over a container with a decoction of medicinal herbs and inhale its vapors for 10-15 minutes. You can pour the herbal infusion into a teapot, insert a paper cone into the spout and breathe through it.

2. Soda solution. Soda is an effective tool in the fight against various viruses and microbes. That is why it is used as a disinfectant for inhalation during the treatment of colds, this folk remedy is considered especially effective for sore throats. Dilute 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a liter of hot water, breathe over the steam for no longer than 10 minutes.

3. Medications. With a dry cough, inhalations are prescribed with bronchodilators (relieve bronchospasm), mucolytics (thinn sputum and facilitate its release), antiseptics (destroy pathogenic microorganisms).

4. Mineral water or saline - they are moisturizing mucous membranes, soften it, improve the general condition.

5. Essential oils. Eucalyptus, peach, pine, mint, sea buckthorn, almond oils are usually used, which are added 2-3 drops per glass of hot water, after which they inhale its steam. Oils are recommended for use in dry cough to soften it and stop the inflammatory process.

For wet cough

1. Decoctions of herbs (coltsfoot, chamomile, raspberry leaves, etc.). In the solution for inhalation, you can add the asterisk balm, menthol drops, coniferous tree oil.

2. Mineral water. Alkaline mineral water moisturizes the respiratory mucosa and thins mucus, improving its excretion from the smallest bronchioles. For inhalations, alkaline mineral water should be used, for example, Borjomi, Narzan, Essentuki-17, etc. 3-4 inhalations can be carried out per day.
